Harvesting Plantains

Harvesting Plantains

This is painted on cloth made from the bark of the Mutuba Tree (a type of fig tree). Bark Cloth has been recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Fabric and has been produced in Uganda for over 500 years. Prince Joseph has long been a tour guide at The Kasubi Tombs which is a UNESCO World Cultural Site. In addition to it being it the final resting place for Prince Joseph’s Royal Ancestors, this is the place where Prince Joseph became an artist. While working at The Kasubi Tombs, Prince Joseph began to paint under the tutelage of the man who claimed to be the first person to utilize bark cloth as a canvas for painting, Professor Musoke. Prince Joseph’s compositions are based on true stories from Africa and he uses his painting to express customs and traditions. He also enjoys to paint wildlife and many of his paintings are from his personal experiences as he also owns a Safari Tour Company for those interested in seeing Africa’s Savannah for themselves.”
